I concede

Yes, the time has come for me to accept that my Steelers will not be going to the playoffs to defend their Title.

They are not playing cohesively. They have lost their last 5 games...and the last 2 losses were to teams that had only won a couple of games between them the whole season.

I will still support them....I will still stay up until all hours of the morning, since we are 3 hours ahead of EST, and watch them...I will still occasionally yell at the TV screen in the hopes that they hear my wise words of wisdom....I will still go the game on Dec. 20th against Green Bay in the hopes of a win, but more importantly to continue my ever faithful support...

WHY?

Because we are PITTSBURGHERS. We are the PITTSBURGH STEELERS...

and we will overcome this hurdle and come back as a better team next year!

Holiday Cheer

Today, Gabriela and I, and 5 other of our friends got together for lunch.

We celebrate for various reasons...

going back to school lunch, too much school lunch,

Christmas lunch, getting back into school after a 5 week Christmas break lunch, too much school lunch, end of the year lunch...

you get the drift~

We all bring a dish. I like to try new dishes with these girls! Last time we had a Mexican food theme, so I tried fried ice cream. It was delicious!

This time I tried a recipe from a Hershey's chocolate cook book called Choco-Coconut Cake Roll.

This was my first time making a rolled cake in a jelly pan. I was nervous....

It cooked fine, and I flipped it onto it's towel. I peeled the aluminum foil off, and rolled it into it's towel, sprinkled with confectioner's sugar, as the recipe stated. So far so good....

Well, then I unrolled it to put in the filling, and it cracked! I am not sure why, but it cracked at various spots:

Maybe it was too moist, maybe the towel should have been a little damp...who knows! I salvaged it enough to roll the filling into it....hurry and cover it with foil again, put it in the fridge and take it to the party.

Then I was able to make it acceptable by putting on powdered sugar!

Voila! It tasted really good, even cracked!

Out boat, The Otter, the supply boat and how we were lucky

Out boat for the 7 days on the Rio Negro was called the Otter.

It was perfect for our group. We were a total of 18. We all had comfortable rooms, hot showers, albeit with river water coming out, and delicious food for every meal!

Check out the different landscapes behind these photos! There were sandy banks with beaches, rugged tree lined banks and others where only the water line and trees were seen.

Due to the many fisherman in our group, we also had a supply boat:

that pulled some of the bass boats. The Otter also pulled a couple bass boats and our canoe that we took on eco trips through the region.

At one point in the journey, we came across this poor boat:

It was traveling either without a supply boat to go ahead of it to help with shallow water, or it didn't have a very good captain! All I can say is that we were lucky to not have the same fate as the Velho Amelio! We found our inner pirate when we had a few hours to kill....

We went to the boat, scavenged a few old signs and the forgotten flag and came away imitating our best pirate "ARGH".

Manaus, Brasil

Our first destination was for two nights in Manaus, the capitol of Amazonas State.

I expected to find a smaller jungle town, but instead we entered into a large city with about 1.7 million people. The houses were beautiful while the modern apartment buildings and lively atmosphere were surrounding us wherever we went.

Our hotel

was situated on the edge of the Negro river. It gave us beautiful sunsets, as almost every evening did on our trip.

We took a city tour to the beautiful Amazonas Opera house.

This theatre was built during the city's rubber boom in the late 1800's. According to our lively guide, Gilberto (who is the owner of the Otter, our house boat for the week), this was a modern beautiful building built in a time when barely 20,000 people lived in Manaus.

It's wood floors were sent to Portugal to be hand carved, where they cut each piece, brought it back to Manaus, and recreated the floor. There are Venetian glass chandeliers

and the best tapestries are on it's walls.

Today, there are many modern companies, including American Ballet Theatre, performing there. Many performances of local origins are free to the public! What a way to bring art into the community.

The next stop was to the Natural Science Museum. It was interesting place that gave us the precursor to what we would see on the Rio Negro! There were interesting stuffed creatures:

fish of all sorts including piranha, bugs and insects, so big that most of us actually hoped we wouldn't see, and then some live fish, including the pirarucu, a very large Amazon fish!

It was a great trip to see some of the city of Manaus.

Time is flying by!!

Time has just been whizzing by since Monday morning!

We returned home from such a relaxing, beautiful trip to the Amazon to the whirlwind that comes every year at Christmas time!

I am not complaining, I love this season! It makes me feel giddy just thinking about snow, yummy Christmas dinner and cookies, Midnight mass (which is now usually at 10), seeing the kids faces on Christmas morning, visiting with my family and my husband's family....

ah, the list goes on and on!

and now for some updates:

1. I will write about the Amazon trip in another post, but it certainly was amazing to be there!

2. My Steelers are hurting a little since I have been gone....lost 2 while I was away, but I know they will come back strong now! Plus, we are going to the game on the 20th in Pittsburgh!!!

I CAN'T WAIT!

3. My daughter had her Holiday presentation today, along with the other 3,000,000 kids in 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades! She is such a tiny little sprite, and she was stuck behind a tall kid! I still took the video though you only see her about 80% of the time! Well, you see her Santa hat the whole time, just not the face attached to it!

They all wore those hats and red shirts...yes all 3,00,000 of them, and it looked great!

4. Gabriela and I had our book group Christmas party today at my house. It was a lot of fun, and the present "stealing" was a bit intense at the end! I "stole" these 4 beautiful small, delicate, candy bowls from a lady, it was the 2nd steal with only one more person after me, and only 1 more chance for someone to steal it because I was the last number to go....and don't you know, it was taken from me by the original lady that opened the present! Let me see if I can explain all this:

#1 lady picked a present, which turned out to be these bowls. Another lady, on her turn, "stole" them from her....a little later, I "stole" them from lady #2. A present can only be "stolen" 3 times, so I felt pretty good about it. HA! Well, the lady that I "stole" them from, turned around and took #1 lady's new gift. So, that meant #1 lady could "steal" again...

and hence, this is how she turned right back to me and got her bowls back!

Boo Hoo :(

Oh well, I ended up with a big pretty, acrylic bucket for ice, drinks and for me, a soon to come new beautiful flower arrangement!

Gabriela took a beautiful bracelet from someone else...in fact, it was lady #1 from my bowl incident!! Poor lady #1 wasn't having much luck today, so I guess it was only right that she got her bowls back :)

Things...

I just commented to Gabriela how I have been such a bad blogger...

so here I am, trying to be better :)

What has been happening in my neck of the woods?

My daughter's class, along with Gabriela's son, has their play this week. So, I have been to all the performances, helping out, filming, etc...

They are doing a play based on the book "Chocolate Fever". It is really cute they way some of them act...Gabriela's son is very funny as a truck driver with a mullet hairdo, cut off sleeves and a great delivery of his lines. My daughter is the nurse, and she is so cute in her nurse's uniform.

They all do a great job, and it is such a good experience to bring drama into their lives!

(other than that which occurs at home, hahaha)

I have not been playing tennis which is very upsetting to me. I have had a hurt wrist for a long time. When it finally really started to sting every time I hit a forehand, I knew that I should get to the doctor. So, I went and he thought it was a ligament at first. After an MRI, he said it was inflammation in my wrist joint. I have to wear a soft brace and take anti-inflammatory medication for two weeks. Then I will go back and see him, and how it is progressing.

In my opinion, it just makes my wrist stiff...and I am not consistent in always wearing it. I wear it a lot, but when I am washing the dishes how can I wear it? I can't get it wet because then it will be gross and smelly!

We are leaving for the Amazon soon. We will be spending a day in the city of Manaus, and then boarding a boat with 14 other people, all of which we know, to cruise the Amazon. We are all very excited about this trip. It has been in the planning for a year now!

It is mostly a fishing adventure for the guys, but the boat captain is throwing in some eco-adventures for us also! It should be a blast! I can't wait to see and hear all the creatures!

We are planning on having a traditional Thanksgiving on the boat. He found turkeys for us, and we told him we would cook that day!

I am making the cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. Other ladies are making pecan pie, stuffing, green bean casserole, etc...

I think this is going to be a very exciting Thanksgiving for us all!

I am thankful for my family, our health and happiness and the joy that every day life brings into my world. My friends are wonderful and I want to say thank you to all of them that bring laughter and fun into my life....

Fernando de Noronha

This was the second "leg" of our trip.

We spent 6 glorious days on this island.

It is ringed by many beautiful beaches and of course, coral reefs :)

Some of the beaches are difficult to get to, but that just made the adventure all the more fun.

We visited, literally, ALL the beaches. Our son was the map guide to finding them! They were such troopers...sometimes climbing over hot sand or rocks in bare feet, or being so brave and hopping from stone to stone...

all in the quest for the amazing beaches. Here are two of my favorite, but I will post pictures of them all at the end.

On Baia dos Porcos you had to climb up and over some rocks with access from another beach called Cacimba do Padre (soft white sand and expansive was this beach), and what you came to was a beautiful, hidden sanctuary with large jutting rocks and pools and a curious little rodent/squirrel indigenous to the island called a Vespucci, I think. (In other texts, they say this rodent is extinct, but there was something there that looked like it!)

On Praia dos Sanchos you climb down a skinny passageway that they have put two ladders into and come to another amazing, cream colored sand beach.

We took a boat ride on the first day and did a neat activity where they drag you along in the water while you hold onto a large boomerang looking device connected to the back of the boat, breathing on snorkel. We saw turtles and an eel. The kids were loving it! They give you dinner on the boat by grilling on a small grill attached to the back of the boat!

My husband thought this was very cool...and something to consider for our future boat. I let him know, gently, that I am sure that it would not really be allowed to have a fire burning grill on the back of your boat because of Code 1234567, in the maritime laws of the US!

The kids also came on the dive boats with us. I do not have any pictures of our dives because I was trying out my video for the first time. It was amazing, and though I love the pictures, video is so much cooler!! I can actually still enjoy the dive without being so focused on one or two fish/corals/etc that I try to get the perfect picture of. Unfortunately, the video is going to take awhile for me to figure out how to upload it. I promise that I will work it out!

The exciting part of the dives for them was seeing dolphins in the Baia dos Golfinhos...in fact, almost every day we were on a boat we saw dolphins. They saw a shark jump out of the water and they saw turtles. The dive bug has really bit my son, so this summer we are going to see about getting him certified! I am so excited for him and us. We would love to share our passion with our children!

Our pousada, Teju Acu, was amazing. It was small and intimate, yet had a good restaurant, nice pool to relax around and just in a beautiful setting! The people that worked there were so friendly. They new our names by the first evening we were there, and always treated us so well.

My son asked one of the dive masters where to go for a good bite to eat for lunch...figuring the locals know best, right?! Well, he sent them to a place that has good milkshakes:) They were hooked after that...every day we went for a milkshake at TAMAR. This is a project that is very interesting here in Brasil. They are dedicated to saving the marine turtles that nest in and around different shores on this island, and the mainland Brasil. They had a little shop that sold refreshments, including the famous milkshakes on its property. Boy, they were really good!

And just as we thought, our last day was a little sad, but, we didn't know that we still had one adventure left! The owner of our pousada, a Brasilian, but had spent many years in England, led us on an amazing trek. We all went without suspecting that it would be quite as difficult as it was! We had to walk/hop/skip over some rocks. They were slippery where they were wet, they were hot where the sun was blazing on them...

but what we came to was a little paradise!

This clear pool had little fish swimming around, cool water to bathe in and was so hidden that I am not sure anyone would ever know you were there!

It was a perfect ending to such a wonderful journey we all took to a little island called Fernando de Noronha.

The island was quirky...it has it's own rhythm and soul. The people are friendly, the food was pretty good and the views are just amazing!
