El Cemetario Recoleta is a famous cemetery in the Recoleta neighborhood of Buenos Aires. There are many famous Argentineans buried there, including Eva Peron.
There are past Presidents and other famous Argentines alongside many other families.
The cemetery is amazing. It has some incredibly interesting architecture that includes statues and figurines, made from everything from fallen down bricks and stones to the most beautiful granite.
We were fascinated with the main thoroughfares with tree lined sides that broke off into little paths and "streets".
There were graves that had dates from the 1800's!
Some are down stairways and some are right there in front of you...
Some have beautiful stained glass while others are covered in dusty cobwebs...
We were lucky enough to have our hotel right around the corner from here, so we visited a few times. I know it seems morbid, but the structures were just astonishing. There were people there praying, delivering flowers and then tourists, just visiting.
What an interesting place to visit, though a cemetery might not be on the top of your list!
My favorites in another post coming soon....

Where are pictures of all the cats???
I love that cemetary!
Old cemeteries are very interesting. The one you show looks like a city of its own.
That cemetery has a history.
New cemeteries are cold and boring...

Wow, amazing! I hope I get to see it some day. One of my favorite things to do when I go back to Maine is visit old cemeteries. I have yet to see a really spectacular one like Recoleta, though.
I love BA and this is the only that I visit a cemetery ; )
I love the pics.
Great pics! I enjoy taking pictures at old cemetery's, as they can be so rich with history! :)
Hi BG! Long time no see. So was very happy to have you visit. I never really gave much thought to cemeteries until I went to Europe and while there saw some amazing ones. :)
Cemeteries are so interesting and I love your pics. One of my favourite memories is visiting my great grandparents' graves in Holland. It just is so meaningful to see their names--even though I didn't know them, I felt touched by the dates and names. I agree with an above poster that new cemeteries are not nearly as nice.
